Chapter 07 · research & sources
Studio: record & transcribe
Studio turns interviews into text you can trust and quote — without the audio ever leaving your Mac. Record, transcribe, name the voices, pull the quote.
In, and only inCapture
Record directly in Studio, or import audio you already have. Everything is captured and processed on your device. For a reporter on the record — or off it — that is the whole point: the interview exists on your Mac and nowhere else unless you export it yourself.
No cloud earsOn-device transcription
Transcription runs entirely on-device, with timestamps on every segment. Speaker separation is deliberately honest: roono clusters segments by voice, and you relabel the speakers — SPEAKER 1 becomes “Director,” SPEAKER 2 becomes “Ferry worker.” You name the voices once; the transcript keeps them straight.
⏎ is the magic keyPulled quotes
Press ⏎ on any transcript row and the quote lands at your draft cursor with a live ♪mm:ss link. Clicking that link — yours or your editor's — plays the audio from exactly that moment. A quote in roono is never just text; it is a claim with its evidence still attached. Try it: click the starred row below.
Nobody logs the winter runs. That's the whole point of the winter runs.
“In winter the island went quiet. You could hear the cables sing.”
The ledgers were already gone when I got there.
The harbor master would not say who was on the dawn ferry.
Click (or Enter on) the starred row — the quote arrives in the draft with its ♪03:12 link, exactly as ⏎ works in Studio.
Sensitivity is inheritedThe Vault connection
Mark an audio file as vault-resident and its transcript becomes vault-resident too — encrypted, absent from agent workspaces and ordinary exports, and out of Spotlight. The protection follows the material wherever it flows, so a sensitive source stays sensitive in every form. The Vault chapter covers what that means.
Recognition runs with the system speech stack on your Mac. Interviews are not uploaded for transcription — the only way audio or transcript leaves the machine is an export you ask for.
